시리아 정부가 유명 반체제인사와그의 십대 아들을 고문하고 있을지도 몰라 두렵다고 반체제인사의 변호사가 국제앰네스티에 말했다.
왈리드 알 분니(Walid al-Bunni)는 18세의 아들 무아야드(Mu’ayad)와 함께 8월 6일 은신처에서 체포된 뒤 독방에 수감 되어 있다. 아들 무아야드는 시위에 참여하지 않은 것으로 알려졌다.
왈리드의 변호사는 “무아야드를 감옥에 가둔 건 아들이 고문 당하는 것을 지켜보는 고통을 주기 위한 것일 가능성이 있어 매우 걱정된다”고 국제앰네스티에 말했다.
왈리드 알-분니(46)는 시리아 정부가 지난 3월부터 개혁을 요구하는 시위대를 유혈 진압하면서 구금한 활동가 수 백 명 중 한 명이다.
바샤르 알-아싸드(Bashar al-Assad) 정권에 서슴없이 비판을 해 온 왈리드 알-분니는 민주주의와 정치 개혁을 위해 목소리를 높인 대가를 혹독히 치러 왔다.
두 차례 수감된 이력이 있는 그는 치안군이 그의 집 대문을 부수고 들어오자 이를 피해 그의 두 아들과 2011년 5월 5일 종적을 감췄다.
“무아야드는 눈에 넣어도 아프지 않은 아들이다. 무아야드는 시위에 참여하지 않았다고 생각한다”고 그의 변호사가 말했다.
왈리드 알 분니는 그의 두 아들 이야드(Iyad), 무아야드(Mu’ayad)와 함께 시리아 정치 치안군으로 보이는 무장한 남성들에게 체포된 뒤 행방이 묘연해졌다.
19세의 이야드는 체포 뒤 석방됐다. 그러나 아버지와 다른 아들의 행방은 공개되지 않았다. 그의 가족도 시리아 정부가 두려워 왈리드 알-분니와 무아야드의 행방을 묻지 못하고 있다.
왈리드 알-분니는 지금까지 두 차례 장기 수감됐다. 알-아싸드 대통령 집권 후 “다마스쿠스(Damascus)의 봄”이라는 유화 정책을 펴는 동안 이에 반대하는 활동을 한 이유로 2001년부터 2006년까지 5년간 수감 됐다.
그는 또한 인권 존중과 평화적 개혁을 요구하는 반정부 단체에 참여했다는 이유로 2007년 12월부터 2010년 6월 16일까지 2년 6개월 형을 살았다.
마지막 구금에서 풀려난 지 얼마 되지 않은 2010년 6월 22일, 국제앰네스티는 감정이 격한 왈리드 알-분니와 이야기 할 기회를 가졌다.
왈리드 알-분니는 눈물이 고인 채 “감옥에 있는 동안 아이가 나를 필요로 할 때 함께 있지 못했던 것을 생각하면 때때로 우울해지곤 했다”고 말했다.
그는 이어 “하지만 나에게는 대의가 있고 국민들이 존엄하고 자유롭게 살아야 한다는 사실이 떠올랐다”고 말했다.
국제앰네스티가 수집한 자료에 따르면 3월 중순 대규모 시위가 일어난 이래로1,800 여 명 이상의 사람들이 사망했다. 사망자 중 다수가 평화 시위 중 시리아 군인과 치안군의 살상 무기 때문에 사망한 것으로 알려졌다.
시리아 정부는 수 천 명을 체포해 알려지지 않은 곳에 있는 독방에 구금했다. 이 곳에서는 고문가 학대가 만연했다고 알려져 있다.
국제앰네스티는 표현, 결사, 집회의 자유를 행사했다는 이유만으로 독방에 수감된 왈리드 알-분니와 그를 압박하기 위해 죄 없이 독방에 수감된 그의 아들 무야마드 알 분니를 양심수로 보고 있으며, 이들의 조속한 석방을 요구했다.

Syrian authorities are feared to be torturing a prominent dissident and his teenage son, his lawyer has told Amnesty International.
Walid al-Bunni has been detained incommunicado since he was arrested from his Damascus hiding place on 6 August along with his 18-year-old son Mu’ayad, who is not believed to have taken part in the demonstrations.
“I’m very worried that they may be keeping Mu’ayad in prison with his dad just to cause Walid pain by watching his son being tortured,” Walid’s lawyer told Amnesty International.
“Mu’ayad is the apple of his dad’s eye, I don’t believe he took part in the protests.”
Walid al-Bunni, aged 46, is one of hundreds of Syrian activists detained amid the government’s bloody crackdown on protesters who have been calling for reforms since March.
An outspoken and fearless critic of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Walid al-Bunni has paid a steep price for speaking out for democracy and political reforms.
Having been imprisoned twice before, he and two of his sons went into hiding on 5 May 2011 after security forces broke down the front door of his flat.
Walid al-Bunni has been missing since he was arrested by armed men believed to be members of Syria’s Political Security forces along with his two sons, Iyad and Mu’ayad.
Iyad, aged 19, was later released. The whereabouts of his brother and father have not been disclosed by the Syrian authorities, while the family is too afraid to ask the authorities for information
Walid al-Bunni has served lengthy prison sentences twice before. He spent five years in jail from 2001 until 2006 for his activities during the “Damascus Spring”, a period following President al-Assad’s rise to power.
He was also jailed for two and a half years from December 2007 to 16 June 2010 for his involvement in a coalition of opposition groups calling for peaceful reform and respect for human rights.
Amnesty International spoke to an emotional Walid al-Bunni on 22 June 2010, shortly after his most recent release from detention.
“During my imprisonment I sometimes felt melancholy for not being present for my children when they need me,” he said tearfully.
“But then I remember that I am man of a cause and that our people should live a dignified and free life.”
More than 1,800 people have been killed since mass protests began in mid-March, according to a list of names compiled by Amnesty International. Many of them were reportedly killed by live ammunition used by the Syrian army and security forces during generally peaceful protests.
The Syrian authorities have arrested thousands and held many incommunicado at unknown locations where torture and other ill-treatment are reported to be rife.
Amnesty International has called for the immediate release of Walid al-Bunni and Mu’ayad al-Bunni as they are prisoners of conscience,.
Walid al-Bunni is detained solely for exercising his rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly, while Mu’ayad al-Bunni appears to be detained solely to put pressure on his father.
