글이 지닌 힘은 무엇일까? 정확히 말해, 편지가 지닌 힘은 무엇일까? 바빌론 시대에 쓰인 인류 최초의 편지에서부터 오늘날 오프라인에서 가장 흔하게 접할 수 있는 광고 우편물에 이르기까지, 편지의 가치는 극적으로 상승했다 추락하기를 거듭해 왔다. 소중한 사람의 말을 담아오는 반가운 존재에서, 기업의 광고 문구만이 실린 삭막한 존재로 전락하기도 했다.
말하자면, 이제 편지는 ‘한 물 간’ 시대라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
그럼에도 불구하고 매년 12월 10일, 세계 인권의 날마다 전 세계 사람들은 하나가 되어 편지를 쓰고 있다. 부당하게 감옥에 갇힌 사람들과 그 가족들에게 지지를 보내고, 그들을 감옥에 몰아넣은 정부 지도자들에게 석방을 요구하는 편지를 쓰는 것이다.
사람들이 이렇게 편지를 쓰는 이유는, 세상에서 잊혀진 채 비좁은 감방에 갇혀 두려움에 떠는 이에게 바깥 세상에서 온 편지는 희망의 상징이기 때문이다. 정부 지도자와 권력자들에게 바깥 세상에서 온 편지는 전 세계가 지켜보고 있다는 경고이기 때문이다. 다시 말해, 수천, 수만 명의 사람들이 편지를 쓰는 이유는 그들의 말 한 마디 한 마디가 모여 더욱 큰 힘과 위안이 되고, 감옥의 문을 열어젖힐 만큼 강력한 힘을 발휘하기 때문이다. 이 모든 것이 국제앰네스티의 세계적인 편지쓰기 마라톤 캠페인, Write for Rights 활동의 일환으로 진행되고 있다.
550만 건의 지지 메시지
2017년, 학생과 어린이, 교사, 청소부, 시장 가판대 주인 등 수많은 앰네스티 지지자들은 Write for Rights 캠페인에 참여해 550만 건이라는 전례 없는 참여도를 보였다. 직접 정성스레 꾸민 편지와 그림, 엽서를 보내기도 했다. 이러한 활동의 집단적인 효과는 부인할 수 없을 정도였다.
1. 자유를 되찾은 마하딘
4월, 날조된 혐의로 18개월 이상 수감되어 있던 차드의 온라인 활동가 마하딘(Mahadine)이 마침내 석방되었다. 마하딘은 페이스북에 정부를 비판하는 내용의 글을 올렸다는 이유로 종신형을 선고받을 위기에 처해 있었다. 지지자들은 마하딘을 지지하며 69만 건 이상의 액션에 참여했다. 마하딘의 아들이 읽고 있는 이 연대 카드도 마찬가지다.

2. 더욱 안전해진 니 율란
중국의 니 율란은 수십 년 동안 폭력적인 괴롭힘에 시달리면서도 강제 퇴거된 사람들을 용기 있게 옹호하고 나섰다. 수십만 명이 니 율란을 지지하며 편지를 보낸 덕분에, 그녀가 처한 상황은 한층 개선되었다.

3. 긴급 치료를 받게 된 하난
하난 바드르 엘 딘은 2013년 7월 남편이 정부의 손에 실종된 이후로 이에 대한 해명을 요구해 왔다. 하난은 이러한 경험을 바탕으로, 이집트에서 자신과 마찬가지로 소중한 가족을 잃은 사람들과 함께 공동으로 단체를 설립하게 되었다. 그러나 2017년 5월, 정부가 거짓 혐의를 뒤집어씌우고 그녀를 체포하면서 하난의 활동은 갑작스레 중단되고 말았다. 교도소 생활 중 하난의 건강 상태는 더욱 악화됐지만, 50만 명이 넘는 사람들이 그녀를 지지하는 액션에 참여한 덕분에 하난은 필요한 치료를 받을 수 있었다. 하난의 가족은 Write for Rights 캠페인을 통해 세계적인 관심이 하난에게 집중되었고, 그로 인해 이와 같이 직접적인 결과를 얻게 되었다고 말한다.
4. 클로비스의 활동, 보답을 받다
클로비스는 마다가스카르의 귀중한 열대우림을 보호하기 위해 헌신했다가 오히려 자신의 생명을 위협받는 상황에 처하게 되었다. 그러나 Write for Rights에 그의 사례가 소개되면서 세계 언론의 관심이 집중됐고, 덕분에 클로비스가 모국에서 처한 상황은 크게 변했다. 현재는 곳곳의 지역단체에서 클로비스를 공개적으로 지지하고 나섰고, 환경운동에 헌신한 그의 노력을 기리며 상을 수여하기도 했다.
얼마나 많은 편지를 받았는지 모르겠지만, 수천 통에 이를 정도였어요. 캐나다의 어린 학생이 쓴 편지부터, 저 멀리 암스테르담에서 보낸 편지도 있었어요. 매우 감동적이었고, 제게 큰 용기가 되었습니다. 앰네스티의 캠페인 활동으로 제 이야기가 전 세계에 알려졌고, 덕분에 제게도 엄청난 변화가 일어났어요. 지금은 2017년 ‘용감한 마다가스카르인상’을 받으러 가는 길입니다. 덕분에 저는 스스로에게 큰 자부심을 느낍니다. 계속해서 투쟁하고 싶은 의욕도 샘솟아요.”

5. 술하즈의 가족, 위안을 얻다

술하즈 만난(Xulhaz Mannan)은 방글라데시 성소수자들의 인권을 용기 있게 옹호하고 나섰다가 결국 자택 거실에서 살해당하고 말았다. 술하즈의 이야기는 전세계 사람들의 심금을 울렸다. 수천, 수만 명이 술하즈 피살 사건의 진상 규명을 요구했고, 술하즈의 가족들에게는 연대와 지지의 메시지를 보냈다.

6. 밀파MILPAH의 투쟁은 계속된다
밀파 선주민 운동은 온두라스에서 영리추구를 위해 자원을 착취하려는 기업과 맞서 선조들의 땅을 지키기 위해 노력했고, 그 과정에서 수많은 위협과 협박에 시달려 왔다. 그러나 전 세계에서 보내온 격려 덕분에, 회원들은 이전보다 훨씬 안전한 환경에서 지내게 되었다고 한다.
우리가 오늘도 이렇게 살아 있는 건 국제앰네스티를 비롯한 국제 단체 덕분이에요. 보내주신 편지를 전부 읽지는 못했지만, 전 세계 수많은 나라에서 온 편지라는 건 알 수 있었어요. 어린이, 청소년, 성인까지 세계 곳곳에 동지가 있다니 정말 기쁘고 자랑스러워요. 여러분의 지지에 감사드립니다. 덕분에 힘을 얻고 있어요. 우리는 더 이상 외롭지 않습니다. 여러분의 지지로 더 많은 용기를 얻어, 앞으로도 인권과 환경을 계속해서 보호해 나갈 것입니다.”

7. 사크리스, 수천 명에게 지지를 받다
사크리스 쿠필라Sakris Kupila는 핀란드의 트랜스젠더 인권을 옹호하는 의대생이자 청년 활동가다. 앰네스티가 처음 사크리스와 함께 활동을 시작했을 때만 해도 상황은 쉽지 않았다. 사크리스는 괴롭힘을 당하며 고립된 기분을 느꼈고, 대학에서도 수많은 적대적인 시선과 마주해야 했다. 그러나 Write for Rights 사례자로 참여하게 되면서 그에게도 기회가 주어졌고, 마땅히 받아야 할 존중을 받게 되었다.
저는 이상한 존재가 아니라, 어쩌다 트랜스젠더가 되었을 뿐 그 외에도 많은 개성을 지닌 한 사람의 개인일 뿐이에요. 이렇게 많은 사람들이 액션에 참여하고 저를 걱정해준다는 게 믿기지가 않아요.”

8. 세계로 전해진 샤켈리아의 메시지
오빠 나키에아가 피살된 사건의 진상 규명을 요구하는 샤켈리아Shackelia의 목소리에 50만 명이 넘는 사람들이 힘을 보탰다. 긴 세월 동안 멈추지 않았던 그녀의 캠페인 활동과 Write for Rights 활동이 미친 영향을 돌이켜 보며 샤켈리아는 이렇게 말했다.
전국에서 쏟아졌던 연대 표현이 이제는 국내뿐만 아니라 전 세계에서도 밀려들고 있습니다. 총리에게 편지를 보내는 정성과, 그 덕분에 이룰 수 있는 일들을 생각하면 내가 정의를 추구하는 데 최적의 위치를 차지하고 있다는 기분이 들어요. 이 활동을 이어가기 위해 어떤 자원이 필요한지 확인할 수 있었어요. 국제앰네스티의 도움을 받을 수 있어서 행복합니다.”
9. 보호받는 있다고 느끼는 파리드와 이사
인권옹호자 이사 암로(Issa Amro)와 파리드 알 아트라쉬(Farid al-Atrash)는 헤브론을 비롯한 서안지구 점령지역에서 이스라엘이 불법 정착촌을 형성하고 있는 것에 반대하며 수 년 동안 평화적인 활동을 벌여 왔다. 그 수 년 동안의 활동으로 괴롭힘은 물론 거듭되는 체포에 시달리기도 했다. 그러나 Write for Rights에 이들의 사연이 소개되면서 세계의 관심이 집중되었고, 덕분에 두 사람은 보호 받는 기분이 든다고 말한다. “전 세계에서 이렇게 많은 지지를 보낼 거라고는 상상도 못 했어요.” 파리드는 자신들에게 도착한 수많은 연대 카드를 들고 포즈를 취하며 이렇게 말했다.

10. 세계가 함께 하고 있다는 것을 알게 된 타네르와 이스탄불 10
국제앰네스티 터키지부의 이사장인 타네르 킬리스(Taner Kiliç)와 이스탄불 10의 자유를 요구하며 약 875,000명이 편지를 썼다. 그러나 이스탄불 10은 감옥에서는 풀려났지만 그들의 자유는 지금도 위협받고 있으며, 타네르는 여전히 석방되지 못한 상태다. 타네르가 석방되고 모든 혐의가 취소될 때까지 우리는 투쟁을 멈추지 않을 것이다. 이스탄불 10 중 한 사람인 귀날 쿠르션(Günal Kurşun)은 1월 재판을 받을 당시, 처음으로 받았던 연대 편지를 행운의 부적으로 뒷주머니에 지니고 있었다고 말했다.
15~20년 전쯤 저도 앰네스티 캠페인에 참여하며 콜롬비아와 이집트, 미얀마 등지에 엽서와 편지를 썼던 게 기억이 나요. 20년이 지난 지금은 제가 그 편지를 받고 있네요. 보내주셔서 정말 감사합니다. 제게는 매우 소중한 것들이에요.”
10 ways you proved your words have power
What’s in a word? More precisely, what’s in a letter? Since the first known correspondence, written in Babylonian times, to the most common form of offline correspondence we receive today: junk mail – the letter has seen a dramatic rise and fall in personal value. Letters have gone from bearing longed-for thoughts from loved ones, to soulless marketing speak from corporations.
You might say, letters have had their day.
And yet, every year, people around the world get together on 10 December, World Human Rights Day, to write letters. They write to people who are locked up unfairly – and to their family members. They write to the government leaders who put them there, and demand they release them.
They write because for the person sitting in a cramped cell, fearful and forgotten, a letter from outside brings hope. They write because for government leaders and authorities, a letter from outside says the world is watching. In short, hundreds of thousands of people write because their words have the power to bring strength and comfort – and enough force to unlock prison doors. They do all this as part of Write for Rights, Amnesty’s global letter-writing marathon.
5.5 million messages of support
In 2017, Amnesty supporters – students, schoolkids, teachers, cleaners, market stallholders, and so many more – took an unprecedented 5.5 million actions as part of Write for Rights. Among them were carefully crafted letters, drawings and postcards. Their collective impact was undeniable.
Mahadine was freed
In April, Mahadine, an online activist in Chad, walked free after spending more than 18 months in prison on fabricated charges. He had been facing a life sentence for a Facebook post critical of the government. Supporters took more than 690,000 actions for him, including this solidarity card, read by his son. Ni Yulan is safer
China’s Ni Yulan has braved decades of violent harassment for standing up for those evicted from their homes. Thanks to the hundreds of thousands who wrote in support of her, her situation has improved. “Due to the international attention [on my situation], the police have reduced their assaults, verbal abuse and violations of my rights,” she said. “Thank you to those of you who wrote for me. Hanan received urgent healthcare
Hanan Badr el-Din had been demanding answers from the authorities since her husband disappeared at their hands in July 2013. Her experience led her to co-found an association for families whose loved ones had similarly disappeared in Egypt. But her work was cut short in May 2017, when the authorities arrested her on false charges. Hanan’s health deteriorated in prison, but thanks to the more than half a million people who took action for her, she received the care she needed. Clovis’ activism was rewarded
Clovis’ dedication to saving Madagascar’s precious rainforest put his life in grave danger. But with his inclusion in Write for Rights came global media attention which has changed his situation in his native country. Today, local organisations show open support for him, awarding him a prize for his environmental activism. “I don’t know how many letters I received, but it’s in the thousands,” he said. “I have even received letters from school children from Canada, all the way to Amsterdam. It is incredibly touching, and really gives me courage. The Amnesty campaign has made a massive difference for me, because it has echoed my story worldwide. And now, I am on my way to receive the prize of 2017 Brave Malagasy. It makes me really proud, and it makes me want to continue the fight.” © Amnesty International Taiwan
Xulhaz’ family felt supported
Xulhaz Mannan’s brave defence of LGBTIQ rights in Bangladesh, which ended in him being murdered in his own living room, touched people across the world. Hundreds of thousands demanded justice for his killing, while also sending words of friendship and support to his family. “I have just received the packs and opened one or two to find the cards and letters – amazing,” said his brother Minhaz. “So much care and love for Xulhaz, can’t believe my eyes, thanks to all of you for this.”
MILPAH lives to fight another day
The MILPAH Indigenous Movement has braved threats and intimidation in Honduras as they defend their land against corporations bent on exploiting that land for profit. But with global support, members of the movement have said their safety has improved. “It is thanks to Amnesty International and other international organizations that we are still alive,” they told us. “We haven’t been able to read all of the letters but they’ve come from so many countries around the world. We are happy and proud to have friends from all over the world: children, young people, adults. We thank you for the support. It gives us strength. We do not feel alone. Sakris has the support of thousands
Sakris Kupila is a medical student, youth activist and defender of transgender rights in Finland. When he first started working with us, things weren’t easy. He was being harassed, feeling isolated, and was facing lots of hostility even in university. But being part of Write for Rights gave him a platform and the respect he deserves. “I’m less of a token or strange object and more of an individual who happens to be trans, and other things besides that,” he said, adding: “It is unbelievable to see how many people took action and cared.” (© Tomi Asikainen /Amnesty International)
Shackelia’s message has gone global
More than half a million people echoed Shackelia’s calls for justice in the killing of her brother Nakiea. Reflecting on her long-standing campaign and the impact Write for Rights has had, she said: “It is no longer a national outpouring of solidarity but a global one. Just the commitment towards writing letters to the Prime Minister and the things that are achievable as a result of that, it made me feel that I was in the best position in pursuit of justice…I saw the kind of resources that this activism takes and I was happy that Amnesty International was able to support me in this”. Farid and Issa feel protected
Human rights defenders Issa Amro and Farid al-Atrash have taken a peaceful stand against Israel’s illegal settlements in the city of Hebron and other places in the occupied West Bank for years. And for years they have faced harassment and repeated arrests for their activism. But with Write for Rights turning the world’s attention to the authorities, the two men say they feel protected. “We never knew how much support we had from all over the world,” said Farid, pictured with just some of the many solidarity cards the men received “People stood with us in order to pressure the Israeli authorities to drop all the charges against us and to stop harassing human rights defenders in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Taner and the Istanbul 10 know the world is with them
Nearly 875,000 people wrote for the freedom of Amnesty Turkey’s chair Taner Kiliç and the Istanbul 10. Although the Istanbul 10 are no longer in prison, their freedom is still at risk, and Taner remains locked up. All are under threat simply for defending human rights. We continue to fight on until Taner is free and the charges against all are finally dropped. Günal Kurşun, one of the Istanbul 10, told us he kept the very first solidarity letter he received in his back pocket for good luck at his hearing in January: “I was writing post cards and letters 15, 20 years ago, for different AI [Amnesty] campaigns to Colombia to Egypt to Myanmar, I remember. Twenty years later I have now received letters… Thank you very much for sending, this is very valuable for me.”
