U2 앨범에 독점 곡 기부하기로 결정
그린데이는 5월 1일 화요일 존 레논 ‘노동자 계급의 영웅’의 리메이크 버전을 발표할 예정이다.
실제 존 레논의 목소리 샘플을 담고 있는 이 곡은 국제 앰네스티의 발매예정 앨범 “Make Some Noise”를 위해 독점적으로 녹음되었으며 iTunes store 등의 음악 사이트에서 다운로드 파일 형태로 발매될 것이다.
그린데이의 ‘노동자 계급의 영웅’은 이 앨범의 세 번째 트랙에 수록되어 있다.
이는 3월과 4월 존 레논의 ‘#9 Dream’ 리메이크 곡과 I’m losing you의 코린 베일리 레이 버전으로 R.E.M.이 국제적인 성공을 거둔데 힘입은 것이다.
한편, U2는 Make Some Noise 프로젝트에 참여하기로 마지막 순간에 결정한 것으로 알려졌다.
이 밴드는 ‘Instant Karma’를 아주 멋지게 녹음했는데 앨범에는 이외에도 존 레논의 20여곡들이 Black Eyed Peas, Christina Aquilera, Jack Johnson, Snow Patrol, Aerosmith등의 세계적인 아티스트들에 의해 녹음되어 있다.
그 앨범은 6월 말 워너브라더스 레코드사에 의해 발표될 것이며 전체 곡 목록은 조만간 알려질 예정이다.
이 앨범은 국제 앰네스티의 기금 모금과 세계적인 캠페인 활동에 대한 인식을 높이며, 수단 다르푸르지역의 현 위기상황에 대한 관심을 불러일으키는데 목표를 두고 있다.
그린데이의 기타리스트 겸 보컬인 빌리 조 암스트롱은 “우리는 ‘노동자 계급의 영웅’앨범에 참여하고 싶었는데 그 이유는 고립, 계급, 사회 계층이라는 앨범의 테마가 우리에게 반향을 일으켰기 때문인데 그것은 거칠고, 공격적인 노래이다. 가사 중 ‘내가 아는 한 당신은 아직 농민층에 불과해’라는 부분에서 정말 이 문제에 관여해야겠다고 느꼈으며 나는 우리가 그들에게 정의를 행했기를 바란다.”
모든 음악 판권을 관대하게 기부한 요코 오노는 “이 캠페인을 통해 나의 시대 사람들 다수에게 너무나 익숙한 음악이 이제는 완전히 새로운 세대에 의해 포용될 것이라는 점이 경이롭다. 존의 음악은 변화의 영감을 불어넣기 시작했으며 이제는 인권을 대표한다. 우리는 세상을 좀 더 나은 곳으로 만들 수 있다.”고 밝혔다.
국제앰네스티 사무총장 아이린 칸은 “우리의 인권 운동에 존 레논의 음악을 사용하게 되어 두근거린다. 우리는 이 음악이 새로운 세대에게 인권 의식을 불러일으키길 바란다. 결국, 인권은 음악을 가능하게 만드는 것이다. 언론, 표현, 집회의 자유가 없다면 우리는 음악을 만들 수도, 들을 수도, 이에 맞추어 춤을 출 수도 없기 때문이다.”라고 밝혔다.

Green Day will release a cover version of John Lennon’s ‘Working Class Hero’ on Tuesday 1 May.
The track, which features a sample of Lennon’s original vocal, was recorded exclusively for the forthcoming Make Some Noise album for Amnesty International and will be available as a download from the iTunes store and other music sites.
Green Day’s ‘Working Class Hero’ is the third track to be made available from the album.
It will build on the international success of R.E.M’s cover of Lennon’s “#9 Dream’ and Corinne Bailey Rae’s version of ‘I’m Losing You’, which were released in March and April respectively.
Meanwhile, U2 have been confirmed as a last minute addition to the Make Some Noise project.
The band has recorded a stunning version of ‘Instant Karma’ for the album which will feature more than 20 iconic John Lennon songs recorded by an array of best selling international artists, including Black Eyed Peas, Christina Aguilera, Jack Johnson, Snow Patrol and Aerosmith.
The album will be released at the end of June on Warner Bros. Records. A full track list will be available shortly.
The album aims to raise money for Amnesty International and awareness of the organisation’s global campaigning, with a particular focus on the current crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan.
Green Day singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong said: “We wanted to do ‘Working Class Hero’ because its themes of alienation, class, and social status really resonated with us. It’s such a raw, aggressive song — just that line: ‘you’re still fucking peasants as far as I can see’ — we felt we could really sink our teeth into it. I hope we’ve done him justice.”
Yoko Ono, who has generously donated all music publishing royalties, said: “It’s wonderful that, through this campaign, music which is so familiar to many people of my era will now be embraced by a whole new generation. John’s music set out to inspire change, and in standing up for human rights, we really can make the world a better place.”
Irene Khan, Secretary General of Amnesty International, said: “We’re thrilled to be using John Lennon’s songs in our human rights work. We hope this music will bring an awareness of human rights to a new generation. After all, human rights are what make music possible – we wouldn’t be able to create music, listen to it or dance to it without freedom of speech, expression, and association.”
