이집트 법원이 여성 인권옹호자인 아말 파시에게 징역 2년 형 선고를 확정했다. 아말 파시는 이집트 정부가 성폭력 문제를 제대로 해결하지 못하고 있다고 비판하는 내용의 동영상을 온라인에 게시했다가 유죄 판결을 받았다.
이 소식에 대해 나지아 보나임(Najia Bounaim) 국제앰네스티 북아프리카 캠페인국장은 다음과 같이 밝혔다.
“아말 파시의 유죄 평결을 확정한 것은 터무니없고 부정의다. 성폭력 생존자가 자신이 겪은 일을 공개했다는 이유로 징역 2년 형의 처벌을 받은 것은 참으로 수치스러운 일이다. 이번 판결은 정의를 우롱하는 것이며, 이집트 정부의 양심에 오점으로 남을 것이다.

이 판결 시점은 아말이 사랑하는 사람들과 다시 만날 수 있게 된 지 불과 며칠 후였기 때문에 특히 잔혹하다.
이집트 정부는 비판적인 의견이나 자신의 생각을 자유롭게 발언하는 것을 틀어막으려 하지 말고, 아말 파시의 유죄 판결을 즉시 파기하고 그의 모든 혐의를 취소해야 할 것이다.”
아말 파시는 “테러리스트 단체 소속” 혐의로 기소되었지만, 그것과 별개의 사건으로 미결 구금되어 있던 상태였다. 지난 12월 27일, 아말은 매주 경찰서를 방문해 1시간을 보내고, 병원 진료가 필요한 경우 외에는 거주지에서 벗어나지 못하는 보호관찰 상태를 조건으로 석방되었다.
아말 파시는 인권옹호자로, 그의 남편인 모하메드 로프티는 전 국제앰네스티 조사관이자 현재는 이집트 인권 NGO인 이집트 권리자유위원회(Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms)의 국장이다.

Responding to the news that an Egyptian court has upheld a two-year prison sentence against Amal Fathy, a woman human rights defender convicted over a video she posted online criticizing the Egyptian authorities for failing to tackle sexual harassment, Najia Bounaim, Amnesty International’s North Africa Campaigns Director, said:
“The court’s decision to uphold the guilty verdict against Amal Fathy is an outrageous injustice. The fact that a survivor of sexual harassment is being punished with a two-year prison sentence simply for speaking out about her experience is utterly disgraceful. This verdict makes a mockery of justice and should be a stain on the conscience of the Egyptian authorities.
“The timing of the verdict is particularly cruel, coming only days after Amal was reunited with her loved ones.
“Instead of lashing out against critics and people who courageously speak their minds freely, the Egyptian authorities should immediately quash Amal Fathy’s conviction and drop all the charges against her.”
Amal Fathy had been in pre-trial detention in relation to a separate case against her in which she is charged with being a “member of a terrorist group” among other offences. On 27 December, Amal was released on probation, requiring her to spend an hour at a police station on a weekly basis and confining her to her place of residence except for when she needs to attend medical appointments.
Amal Fathy is a human rights defender who is married to Mohamed Lotfy, a former Amnesty International researcher and the current director of the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms, an Egyptian human rights NGO.
