6월 12일 수요일, 수만 명의 시위대가 홍콩 거리를 가득 메웠다. 홍콩 정부에 범죄인 인도 법안의 철회를 요구하며 2주 동안 이어진 대규모 시위의 일환이었다.
12일 늦은 오후부터 밤까지 정부 청사 근처에서 평화적인 시위를 벌이던 시위대는 이들을 해산시키려는 경찰로부터 최루가스와 고무탄, 페퍼 스프레이, 경찰봉으로 무자비한 공격을 당했다. 이러한 경찰의 불법 행동은 시위대가 심각한 부상, 심지어는 죽음에 이를 수도 있는 심각한 위험을 초래했다.
국제앰네스티의 경찰 진압 및 디지털 검증 전문가 팀은 이와 같은 홍콩 경찰의 불필요하고 과도한 무력 사용을 면밀히 조사했다. 전문가팀은 경찰의 폭력 사용이 명백했던 14건의 사례를 자세히 기록한 영상물을 검토했다.
검토 결과 고무탄을 위험하게 사용한 사례, 저항하지 않는 시위 참여자를 경찰관이 폭행한 사례, 현장에 있는 기자를 방해하기 위해 경찰이 공격적인 전략을 사용한 사례, 최루가스와 페퍼 스프레이를 남용한 사례를 확인했다.
국제앰네스티가 확인한 모든 사례는 국제법 및 경찰의 무력 사용에 관한 국제 기준을 위반한 것이었다. 검토한 사례는 언론에 보도되었거나 SNS에 게재된 영상들이다.

Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets of Hong Kong on Wednesday, 12 June, in one of a series of mass protests over the past two weeks to demand the government withdraw the extradition bill.
From late afternoon into the night on 12 June, the largely peaceful protesters faced an onslaught of tear gas, guns firing rubber bullets, pepper spray and baton charges from police to disperse the demonstration near government headquarters.
