지난해 수만 명의 여성들이 한 자리에 모였다. 아르헨티나의 입법자들에게 낙태 비범죄화와 안전한 낙태를 요구하기 위해서였다. 국제앰네스티 아르헨티나 지부를 포함해, 여러 운동과 단체에 소속되어 있던 사람들이 변화를 요구하기 위해 하나로 뭉쳤다.
이제부터 소개할 7인의 여성은 ‘녹색 물결’로 알려진 고무적인 운동에 참여했던 사람들이다. 이제 아르헨티나에서 녹색은 안전하고 합법적인 낙태를 요구하는 운동을 상징하는 색깔이 되었다. 이들로부터 앞으로도 활동을 중단할 생각이 없는 이유를 들어봤다.

우리는 아름다운 녹색 물결이었다. 이 물결은 앞으로도 계속 나아갈 것이다

2018년 8월 8일, 낙태 법안 표결 직전, 상원 앞에서는 역사적인 행진이 벌어지고 있었다. 현장은 고양된 공기로 한껏 달아올라 있었다.. 비록 수천 명의 여성들이 고대하던 표결 결과는 나오지 않았지만, 진정한 연대를 느낄 수 있었던 아름다운 날이었다. 그동안 흘린 눈물도 그리 슬픈 것만은 아니었다. 우리는 아름다운 녹색 물결의 일부였으며, 이 물결은 앞으로도 계속 나아갈 것임을, 결국 낙태 합법화를 쟁취해 낼 것임을 느낄 수 있었기 때문이었다. 서로의 곁에 녹색 물결이 있다면, 반드시 이루어질 것이다.

사회에 의문을 가지고, 끊임없이 변화를 요구하라

낙태 합법화에 대한 논의가 진행되는 동안, 나는 거리 행진을 통해서만 승리를 쟁취하는 것이 아님을 배울 수 있었다. 가족과 친구, 학교 동급생들과의 대화를 통해서도 투쟁에서 승리할 수 있다. 언제나 나와 같은 의견을 가진 사람만을 만날 수는 없다.
2018년 8월 8일, 아르헨티나 상원에서 낙태 합법화 관련 논의가 진행되던 날, 나는 국회 앞 시위에 참석했다. 같은 대의를 위해 투쟁하는 사람들이 주변에 이렇게나 많다는 것이 정말 신기했다.
당신과 모든 여성들의 삶의 질을 개선하고 싶다면, 사회에 의문을 가지고 끊임없이 변화를 요구해야 한다.

전환점이 된 사건이었다

아들과 함께 시위에 참여했다. 내가 왜 이런 활동을 하는지, 아들이 이해할 수 있기를 바라서였다. 시위 현장에 자녀를 데리고 온 여성들은 나 이외에도 많았다. 비록 끔찍한 상황 때문에 벌어지게 된 시위였지만, 우리는 한 자리에 모였고 이런 환경에서 서로 다시 만나게 된 것이 반갑고 좋았다.
아르헨티나의 낙태 합법화에 관한 논의는 하나의 전환점이 된 사건이었다. 우리는 아직 배낭이나 핸드백에 묶인 녹색 손수건을 풀지 않았다. 이 투쟁이 단기간에 끝날 거라고는 생각하지 않기 때문이다.

녹색 손수건은 하나의 상징이었다

우리는 패배하지 않았다. 법안은 통과되지 못했지만, 우리는 끝까지 싸웠고 앞으로 기회는 또 올 것이다. 그사이 녹색 손수건은 더욱 멀리 퍼졌고, 저항의 상징이자 새로운 증표가 되었다. 낙태 합법화에 대한 요구는 더 이상 피할 수 없는 것이며, 돌이킬 수 없는 것이다. 이제는 정말 돌이킬 수 없다. 젊은 세대에게서도 많이 배우고 싶다. 이제 청년들의 목소리에 귀 기울이기 시작했다는 점이 매우 중요하다고 생각하기 때문이다.

페미니스트 운동에 참여하는 것은 누구든 환영이다

조직적으로 활동하는 것이 살 길이다. 페미니즘은 내게 찾아온 최고의 선물이다. 민주주의 사회에서 권력을 가지지 못해 충분히 스스로를 대변하지 못하고 우리의 목소리를 들리게 하지 못한다면 그 사회는 진정한 민주주의라고 할 수 없음을 깨닫게 되었다.
낙태 합법화에 관한 논의 덕분에 페미니즘 관련 주제가 더욱 흔하게 다뤄지게 되었다. 카페에서 남자들끼리도 이야기할 만한 주제가 된 것이다. 이전까지는 한 번도 겪어보지 못한 일이었다. 페미니스트 운동에 참여하는 것은 누구든 환영한다.

우리가 이룩한 진전은 되돌릴 수 없는 것이다

내게는 남동생이 있다. 내가 누나임에도 불구하고, 집에서 동생은 모든 것을 나보다 먼저 할 수 있었다. 내가 9살 때, 선물로 새 자전거를 받았다. 나는 밖으로 나가서 혼자 자전거를 타고 싶었지만, 부모님은 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “안 돼, 너는 여자아이니까 무슨 일이 생길지 몰라.” 나는 왜 그런 말씀을 하시는지 이해할 수 없었다. 그때는 화가 났지만, 시간이 지나고 보니 부모님 탓이 아니었다는 걸 알 수 있었다. 부모님께서는 정말 두려웠던 것이다.
나는 분명히 페미니스트다. 일상 생활 속 사소한 계기를 통해 페미니즘이 무엇인지, 왜 중요한지에 대해 알아가기 시작하는 중이다. 최근에는 몇 년 사이 활발해진 여성 운동 덕분에 더욱 많이 배우고 있다. 우리가 이룩한 진전은 돌이킬 수 없는 것이다.

이런 경험은 처음이었다

나는 베네수엘라 출신이다. 그곳에서는 아무도 낙태에 대해 이야기하지 않는다. 앉은 자리에서 쉽게 이야기를 꺼낼 만한 주제가 아니기 때문이다. 그런데 갑자기, 서로를 응원하기 위해 거리로 나와 연대하며 온전히 하나가 된, 멋진 여성들이 가득한 나라로 오게 되었다. 이 모든 일을 생각하면 소름이 돋는다. 이곳에서 이런 운동이 이루어지고 있다는 사실이 내게는 매우 놀랍고 신나는 일이기 때문이다. 우리나라에서도 이런 모습을 볼 수 있기를 바란다. 이렇게 나서서 이야기를 하게 된 것도 그 때문이다. 그날 내가 느낀 것은 이전까지는 상상도 할 수 없었던 감정이었다.

There was excitement in the air at the historic march on the Senate ahead of the abortion vote on 8 August 2018. Although the result wasn’t the one that thousands of women were hoping for, the truth is that it was a beautiful day of real connection. Even the last few tears we cried were not quite so sad, because there was this feeling that we were a beautiful green tide, one that will keep moving forward and will get abortion legalized. It’s going to happen, you just need the green tide by your side.

During the debate on the legalization of abortion, I learned that battles are not only won by marching in the streets, but by talking to family, friends and classmates. You aren’t always going to meet people who agree with you.
On 8 August 2018 – the day the debate took place in Argentina’s Senate – I went to the demonstrations outside the National Congress. It was amazing to be surrounded by so many people fighting for the same cause.
If you want to improve your quality of life and the quality of life for all women, never stop questioning society or calling for change.

I went to the protests with my son, partly so that he could begin to see why I do what I do. There were other women there with their children too. Even though the protests were because of a terrible situation, we came together and were happy to see each other again and find ourselves in such a setting.
The debate on the legalization of abortion in Argentina marks a turning point. We haven’t untied our green bandanas from our backpacks or our handbags because we don’t believe that this fight is short-lived.

This wasn’t a defeat. The law didn’t pass, but we fought and there will be other opportunities. Meanwhile, the green bandana has spread and become a symbol, a new badge of dissent. The demand for the legalization of abortion is inescapable – there’s no going back. There’s no going back.
I want to learn from younger generations because I think it’s crucial that we finally start listening to young people.

Being organized is what saves us. Feminism is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. It’s allowed me to see that this democracy we live in can’t be a democracy if we’re not represented, if our voices can’t be heard because we don’t hold any positions of power.
The debate on the legalization of abortion made feminist topics more commonplace, something that you’d find men chatting about in a café, for instance, and that for me was something that had never happened before. Everyone, one and all, is welcome to join the feminist movement.

I have a younger brother. At home, he was always allowed to do things before I was, even though I was older.
When I was nine, I was given a new bike as a present. I wanted to go out and ride it by myself, but my parents told me, “No, something could happen to you because you’re a girl.” I couldn’t understand why they’d said that. It made me angry, but over time I’ve come to realize it wasn’t their fault. They really were afraid.
I’m definitely a feminist. An awareness of what feminism is and why it’s important is something I’ve started to see in the little things in day-to-day life, and it’s come out more in recent years thanks to the women’s movement. The progress we’ve made can’t be undone.

I’m from Venezuela and over there no-one talks about abortion; it’s just not something you can sit and chat about.
Suddenly I’m in a country full of incredible women who take to the streets to support each other and take a stand, totally united. The whole thing gives me goose bumps because I find it super-exciting that this kind of movement exists here. I want it to exist in my country too, which is why I’m telling you all this.
That day for me was… I never imagined I’d feel what I felt at that moment.
