아르헨티나 녹색 물결 활동가의 손수건
아르헨티나의 알베르토 페르난데스(Alberto Fernández) 대통령이 국회에 임신중지 합법화 법안을 제출했다. 페르난데스 대통령은 올해 3월 임신중지 합법화 법안을 국회에 제출하겠다고 선언한 바 있다.
2018년, 아르헨티나에서는 임시중지 합법화를 위한 역사적인 표결이 진행되었다. 수많은 여성들과 여성·인권 단체들이 “녹색 물결“이라는 운동 아래 모여 임신중지 합법화를 위해 목소리를 높였다. 그러나 표결 결과 임신중지는 합법화되지 못했다. 국제앰네스티를 비롯해 여성 인권을 옹호하는 사람들은 이에 좌절하지 않고 임신중지 합법화를 위해 계속해서 싸워왔다.
아르헨티나 대통령은 스스로의 공약을 지켰고 임신중지 합법화를 위한 법안을 제출했다. 이제는 국회가 이에 걸맞은 행보를 보여야 할 때다.”

이번 대통령의 법안 제출에 대해 국제앰네스티 아르헨티나 지부 사무국장 마리엘라 벨스키는 다음과 같이 밝혔다.
“여성운동의 끊임없는 노력과 활동이 이 역사적인 순간을 만들었다. 임신중지는 오늘날 가장 주목받는 정치적 의제다. 아르헨티나 대통령은 스스로의 공약을 지켰고 임신중절 합법화를 위한 법안을 제출했다. 이제는 국회가 그에 걸맞은 행보를 보여야 할 때다. 여성과 소녀, 그 밖에 임신할 가능성을 가진 모든 이들이 자신의 신체에 대해 자유롭게 결정할 권리를 인정할 수 있는 기회를, 국회는 놓쳐서는 안 된다.”
“이 순간을 기다리며 목소리를 높여 온 지난 몇 년을 돌아보건대, 아르헨티나에서 합법적인 임신중지는 즉각 보장되어야 한다. 상하원의 의사결정권자들은 이런 공통된 요구와 녹색물결에 귀를 기울여야 한다는 걸 깨달아야 한다. 십 수년간 이어진 성과 재생산권 침해를 이제는 멈춰야 할 때다. 임신중지를 합법화하는 것은 반드시 보장해야 할 인권이며 더욱 평등한 사회로 나아가기 위해 필요한 과정이다.”

Legalizing abortion is a human rights imperative and a necessary step towards becoming, once and for all, a more equal society.”
