아델(Adele), 보노(Bono/ U2), 오노 요코(Yoko Ono), 라디오헤드(Radiohead), 패티 스미스(Patti Smith), 브루스 스프링스틴(Bruce Springsteen), 스팅(Sting)을 비롯해 70여 음악가가 푸시 라이엇(Pussy Riot)의 석방을 요구하며 현재 수감중인 푸시 라이엇의 멤버 마샤와 나디아에게 공개서한을 보냈다.
마샤와 나디아는 각각 7월 24일, 26일에 항소심을 앞두고 있다.

마샤(Masha)와 나디아(Nadia) 두 분의 재판이 시작된 지 일 년이 되었습니다. 제가 펜을 든 이유는 전 세계의 사람들이 여전히 두 분을 생각하며, 석방을 위해 노력하고 있다는 점을 확실히 말해주고 싶어서입니다. 푸시 라이엇(Pussy Riot)은 시위를 가장 잘 보여주었습니다. 그렇지만 시위에 참여한 것으로 시달리는 젊은이들이 많고, 우리는 이러한 상황을 우려하고 있습니다. 마샤와 나디아, 두 분은 수감 중임에도 여러모로 이들을 대변하고 있습니다.
마샤와 나디아가 처음 기소되었을 때 많은 예술가가 우려를 표하는 목소리를 냈습니다. 우리는 러시아 정부가 두 분의 사건을 다룰 때 러시아의 위대한 지성과 유머감각 중 일부라도 보여주어 약간의 이해심과 균형을 기대했습니다. 하지만 아무것도 이루어진 것이 없었습니다.
마샤와 나디아에 대한 충격적인 불공정 재판과 구금은 사방으로 퍼져 나갔습니다. 특히 전 세계에서 두 분의 동료 예술가, 음악가, 시민들 그리고 두 분이 아이들과 떨어져 겪고 있는 고통을 느끼는 많은 부모에게 전달되었습니다. 우리는 예배당에서 시위한 것에 대한 민감한 부분을 이해하면서, 두 분이 아이들과 가족, 삶으로 돌아갈 수 있도록 러시아 정부가 이 엄한 처벌을 검토하기를 요청합니다.

배경정보
2012년 2월 21일, 페미니스트 펑크 그룹 ‘푸시 라이엇(Pussy Riot)’의 다섯 멤버들이 모스크바에 위치한 구세주 그리스도 대성당으로 걸어 들어가, 방한모로 얼굴을 가리고 저항가요인 ‘동정녀 마리아여 푸틴으로부터 우리를 구하소서’를 공연했다. 푸시 라이엇은 러시아의 표현의 자유 억압과 정치적 탄압에 대한 시위하는 것이었다. 2012년 8월 17일 나데즈다 톨로코니토바(NadezhdaTolokonnikova)와 마리아 알레히나(Maria Alekhina) 그리고 예카테리나 사무체비치(Ekaterina Samutsevich)는 ‘종교적 증오를 기반으로 한 난동죄’로 죄수유형지에서 2년 징역형을 선고받았다. 2012년 10월 10일 열린 항소심에서, 예카테리나는 2년 집행유예를 선고받았다. 마리아(마샤, Masha)와 나데즈다(나디아, Nadia)는 여전히 수감된 상태이다. 국제앰네스티는 이들을 양심수로 보고있다.

Dear Masha and Nadia,
As the one-year anniversary of your trial approaches, I’m writing to assure you that, around the world, people are both still thinking of you and working for your release. Although you were the most visible of the protesters, we know also that there were many other young people who have suffered in the protests, about whom we are also very concerned. But, in many ways, through your imprisonment, you have come to represent them.
Many artists voiced their concern when these charges were first brought against you, we had every hope that the authorities, in dealing with you, would show some understanding, a sense of proportion, even some of the wonderful Russian sense of humour, but none of the above were forthcoming.
The impact of your shockingly unjust trial and imprisonment has spread far and wide. Especially among your fellow artists, musicians and citizens around the world, including the many parents who feel your anguish at being separated from your children. While understanding the sensitivities of protesting in a place of worship, we ask that the Russian authorities review these harsh sentences, so that you may return to your children, your families and your lives.
The right to freedom of expression and dissent is a legitimate one and essential in any kind of democracy.
You have been accused of what could be described as ‘a victimless’ crime, but in our opinion, in a just society, there can be no crime where there is no identifiable ‘victim’.
Your strength, bravery and fearlessness are an inspiration to us all.

Background
On 21 February 2012, five members of feminist punk group Pussy Riot walked into Moscow’s Christ the Saviour Cathedral and performed a protest song, ‘Virgin Mary, redeem us of Putin (Punk Prayer)’, their faces obscured with balaclavas. The band has staged protests against restrictions on free speech and political oppression in Russia. On 17 August 2012, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina and Ekaterina Samutsevich were sentenced to two years in a penal colony, charged with ‘hooliganism on grounds of religious hatred’. At an appeal hearing on 10 October 2012, Ekaterina’s sentence was suspended with two years probation. Maria (Masha) and Nadezhda (Nadia) are still incarcerated. Amnesty International considers them to be prisoners of conscience.
