알자지라 기자 피터 그레스테(Peter Greste)의 송환으로 그의 동료인 바헤르 무함마드(Baher Mohamed)와 무함마드 파흐미(Mohamed Fahmy)에 대한 구금사실을 무마해서는 안된다고 국제앰네스티가 밝혔다.
국제앰네스티는 이들 셋이 체포된 2013년 12월부터 무조건적이고 즉각적인 석방을 요구해왔다.
하시바 하지 사라위(Hassiba Hadj Sharaoui) 국제앰네스티 중동-북아프리카 부국장은 “피터 그레스테가 구금된 지 1년만에 마침내 이집트에서 풀려나는 것이 확정됐지만 그가 겪은 시련은 그 무엇으로도 보상받을 수 없다. 그의 석방을 둘러싼 세계의 축하 팡파레로 여전히 카이로의 토라 교도소에 남아있는 바헤르 무함마드와 무함마드 파흐미가 고통받고 있다는 사실을 무마할 수 없다”고 말했다.
호주 국적의 피터 그레스테와 이집트-캐나다인인 무함마드 파흐미는 그들에 대한 재판이나 형 집행이 ‘가장 높은 국가적 관심’을 받는 경우 고국으로의 송환을 허용하는 새로운 이집트 법령에 따라 이송되기를 기대해왔다. 이들의 체포는 국제적으로 심한 반발을 샀다.
2015년 1월 1일 절차상의 이유로 항소법원이 이들 셋에 대한 유죄선고를 뒤집었지만, 재심 때까지 그들은 구금상태로 남아있었다. 이들 모두 방송에서 허위사실을 유포하고 무슬림 형제단과 관련이 있다는 혐의로 7년형을 선고받았다.
현재 구금중인 바헤르 무함마드에게는 세명의 자녀가 있다. 지난 2014년 8월 구금돼 있던 그는 막내 아들이 태어날 때에도 함께하지 못했다.
마찬가지로 구금중인 무함마드 파흐미는 이집트와 캐나다 양국의 시민권을 모두 가지고 있으며, 그로 인해 캐나다로 송환될 것이라는 희망을 품고 있다.
하시바 하지 사라위 부국장은 “이들 셋 모두 날조된 혐의들과 부정으로 얼룩진 재판을 감내해야만 했다. 바헤르 무함마드와 무함마드 파흐니를 계속해서 구금하고 있는 것은 명백하게 불공평하고 부당한 처사”라고 말했다.
피터 그레스테의 송환 소식은 이집트와 카타르 당국 사이 깊은 불화 이후 화해가 이뤄진 주간에 발표됐다.
하시바 하지 사라위 부국장은 “더 분명한 사실은 알자지라 방송국을 소유하고 있는 카타르 정부와 이집트 사이 불화로 인해 언론인들이 정치적 희생양으로 쓰였다는 것이다. 이들의 삶이 그토록 함부로 농락당했다는 현실을 절대로 받아들일 수 없다”라고 말했다.
국제앰네스티는 세 명의 언론인에 대한 혐의가 완전히 벗겨질 때까지 지속적으로 노력할 것이다.

The continuing plight of Al Jazeera journalists Baher Mohamed and Mohamed Fahmy must not be forgotten as their colleague Peter Greste is deported from Egypt, said Amnesty International.
The organization has been calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all three men since their arrest in December 2013.
“The news that Peter Greste will finally be allowed to leave Egypt after more than a year in prison comes as a welcome relief, but nothing can make up for his ordeal. It is vital that in the celebratory fanfare surrounding his deportation the world does not forget the continuing ordeal of Baher Mohamed and Mohamed Fahmy who remain behind bars at Tora prison in Cairo,” said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa .
Peter Greste, an Australian national, and Mohamed Fahmy, a dual Egyptian-Canadian national, had sought deportation under new Egyptian legislation that permits the transfer of foreign nationals to their home countries to face trial or serve their sentences in cases of the “highest interest of the state”. The men’s arrest had caused an international outcry.
The convictions of all three men were overturned by the Court of Cassation on 1 January 2015 on procedural grounds but they were kept in detention pending a re-trial. All of the men had been serving seven-year sentences for broadcasting “false news” and involvement with the banned Muslim Brotherhood movement.
Baher Mohamed has three young children. He missed the birth of his youngest son in August 2014 because he was in prison.
Mohamed Fahmy holds Egyptian and Canadian citizenship and there are hopes he may be deported to Canada.
“All three men are facing trumped up charges and were forced to endure a farcical trial marred by irregularities. Continuing to detain Baher Mohamed and Mohamed Fahmy is completely unjust and unwarranted,” said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui.
News of the deportations came weeks after a reconciliation between Egyptian and Qatari authorities after a bitter feud.
“It has become increasingly clear that the journalists have been used as political pawns in a dispute between the authorities of Egypt and the Qatar government, which owns the Al Jazeera network. It is unacceptable that the lives of these men have been so carelessly toyed with,” said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui.
Amnesty International continues to call for the charges against all three men to be dropped.
