2007년 6월, 초등학교 선생님인 요한 테테리사(Johan Teterissa)는 교사와 농민들로 이루어진 동료 22명과 인도네시아 대통령 앞에서 전통춤을 추고 깃발을 흔들며 평화적인 시위를 벌였습니다. 이는 인도네시아 동부 말루쿠의 독립을 요구하는 것입니다.
경찰은 그 즉시 주먹질과 폭행을 가하며 요한과 활동가들을 연행했고, 경찰서에서는 고문이 이어졌습니다.
노골적인 불공정한 재판 끝에 이들은 모두 ‘반란’ 혐의로 유죄가 선고되었습니다. 요한 테테리사는 2008년 무기징역을 선고받았다가 15년형으로 감형되었습니다. 평화의 춤을 추며 깃발을 흔든 대가로 이미 10여 년을 교도소에서 보냈습니다.
평화적으로 정치적 입장을 표현하는 것은 권리입니다.
요한 테테리사와 동료들은 즉각 조건 없이 석방되어야 합니다.
Your Excellency
I call on you to immediately and unconditionally release prisoner of conscience Johan Teterissa and all of his co-protestors imprisoned solely for their peaceful political expression.
Johan, a teacher from Maluku, has spent nearly 10 years in prison for the simple act of waving a flag. He led a group of men in a “cakalele” dance protest in front of the former President which ended with them raising a flag banned by the government. The men were taken by the police, whipped, beaten and imprisoned following an unfair trial. Johan was sentenced to life, reduced to a 15-year sentence.
Johan and his co-protestors remain imprisoned thousands of kilometres from family and friends. Pending their release they should be immediately transferred to a prison closer to their families.
