로이터통신 기자 2명이 미얀마 라킨 주에서 군의 인권침해행위를 조사하던 중 임의로 구금된 가운데, 미얀마 정부는 이들을 즉시 석방해야 할 것이라고 국제앰네스티가 밝혔다.
구금된 기자, 와 론과 초 소 우의 재판은 1월 10일 열릴 예정이다. 이들은 라킨 주에서 최근 진행 중이던 군사작전을 조사하던 중 2017년 12월 12일 체포되었다.
제임스 고메즈(James Gomez) 국제앰네스티 동남아시아-태평양 사무소장은 “와 론과 초 소 우는 즉시 아무런 조건 없이 석방되어야 한다. 이들은 기자로서의 정당한 업무 외에는 아무것도 한 것이 없다. 라킨 주에서 군이 로힝야를 상대로 폭력과 범죄를 저지른 사실이 알려지지 못하게 하고, 다른 언론인들에게는 선례를 남겨 겁을 주려는 정부의 명백한 시도”라며 “두 사람이 우연히 불쑥 체포를 당한 것이 아니라, 최근 정부가 독립적인 매체를 부쩍 강력하게 제한하고 있는 상황에서 벌어진 것이다. 언론인과 매스컴, 특히 ‘민감한 주제’에 관해 보도한 사람의 경우 괴롭힘과 협박 또는 체포를 당할 위험에 끊임없이 시달리며 살아가고 있다. 표현의 자유를 이렇게 엄중히 탄압하는 것은 멈춰야 한다”고 말했다.
와 론과 초 소 우는 지난 2017년 12월 12일, 미얀마의 주요 도시인 양곤에서 체포되어, 2주 동안 독방에 구금되었다. 주 정부 관계자들은 두 사람이 미얀마의 공직자 비밀 엄수법을 위반한 혐의로 조사를 받고 있다고 밝혔다. 이 혐의로 유죄가 선고되면 최대 징역 14년까지 처해질 수 있다.

The Myanmar authorities must immediately release two journalists from the Reuters news agency who have been arbitrarily detained for investigating military abuses in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, Amnesty International said.
The two journalists, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, are due in court tomorrow. They had been investigating the recent military operations in Rakhine State when they were arrested on 12 December 2017.
“Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo must be immediately and unconditionally released. They have done absolutely nothing but carrying out their legitimate work as journalists. This is clearly an attempt by the authorities to silence investigations into military violations and crimes against Rohingya in Rakhine State, and to scare other journalists away from doing the same,” said James Gomez, Amnesty International’s Director for Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
“These arrests have not happened in a vacuum, but come as authorities are increasingly restricting independent media. Journalists and media outlets, in particular those who report on ‘sensitive topics’, are living with the constant fear of harassment, intimidation or arrest. This clampdown on freedom of speech must end.”

Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were arrested in Myanmar, Yangon’s main city on 12 December 2017. They were held incommunicado for two weeks. State officials have confirmed the two are being investigated for breaching Myanmar’s Official Secrets Act, which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.
