본 글은 2019년 9월 16일 ‘미래를 위한 금요일’의 기후 위기 결석 시위 운동을 대표하여 앰네스티 양심대사상을 받은 그레타 툰베리의 수상 연설문입니다.
이 상은 ‘미래를 위한 금요일Friday For Future‘ 운동을 함께 만든 전 세계 수백만 명의 청소년들을 위한 것입니다. 수많은 청소년이 미래를 위해 싸우고 있습니다. 그들이 누려야 할 미래를 위해서 말입니다.
하지만 보십시오. 그들은 그 미래를 누리지 못하고 있습니다.
우리 모두가 가능한 한 모든 방면에서 압박을 가해야 합니다. 힘을 가진 사람들이 행동에 나서고, 필요한 조처를 하도록 말이죠.”

기업들이 기존의 태도를 유지하는 한, 수십억 명이 가장 기본적인 생활 여건조차 갖추진 못한 채 강제 이주를 당하는 세상이 될 겁니다. 수많은 이들의 가장 기본적인 생활 환경을 빼앗기게 될 것이고 더 이상 인류가 살 수 없는 세상으로 만드는 것이죠.
이 때문에 커다란 분쟁이 일어날 것도, 말 못 할 고통이 만연할 것이라는 점도 자명합니다. 그런데도 많은 사람은 여전히 기후와 환경 위기가 대규모 인구 이동, 기근, 인권침해, 전쟁과 어떻게 관련이 있는지 정확히 알지 못합니다.
현재 기후 위기에 대응하는데 필요한 변화와 정치는 전혀 존재하지 않습니다.
‘미래를 위한 금요일’과 함께하고 있는 우리 청소년들은, 우리가 맞이할 삶을 위해 투쟁하고 있습니다.

그렇기에 우리 모두가 가능한 한 모든 방면에서 압박을 가해야 합니다. 힘을 가진 사람들이 행동에 나서고, 필요한 조치를 취할 수 있도록 말이죠..
‘미래를 위한 금요일’과 함께하는 청소년들은, 우리가 맞이할 삶을 위해 투쟁하고 있습니다. 하지만 그것뿐만은 아닙니다. 우리는 미래의 아이들과 손주들을 위해, 후손들을 위해, 우리가 공유하고, 빼앗고 망치고 있는 생명권을 지닌 지구상의 모든 생명체를 위해 싸우고 있습니다.
모두를 위해 투쟁하는 것입니다. 바로 여러분을 위해서요.
이미 기후 및 환경 위급 상황의 첫 번째 단계로 피해를 보고 있는 세계 각지의 사람들을 위해
유독한 공기 속에서 숨을 쉬고, 오염된 물을 마시며, 기후 및 환경 관련 재해로 인해 집을 버리고 떠나야 했던 사람들을 위해
토지와 하천을 파괴당하고 있는 선주민들을 위해
더욱 강해지고 잦아진 가뭄, 폭우, 폭풍, 녹고 있는 빙하 등 환경 관련 재앙으로 식량과 물 공급을 위협받고 있는 사람들을 위해
해수면 상승으로 폐허가 되어버리거나 수면 아래로 사라져버리고 있는 모든 국가를 위해서 말입니다.
하지만 지금, 사람들이 깨닫기 시작했습니다. 비록 아주 느린 속도지만, 점점 속도가 붙고 있으며 토론의 방향도 변화하고 있습니다.

사람들이 죽어가고 있습니다. 그런데도 너무나 많은 사람이 이를 외면하고 있습니다.
세계는 사상 최대 규모의 인권 위협에 당면해 있습니다. 미첼 바첼레트 유엔 인권고등판무관 역시 최근 제네바에서 열린 유엔 인권이사회 총회에서 기후 위기를 언급하며 같은 발언을 했습니다.
바첼레트 고등판무관은 모든 국가의 경제 및 제도적, 정치적, 사회적, 문화적 구조는 물론 현세대와 미래 세대의 인권이 모두 그 영향을 받을 것이라고 말했습니다.
지금 국가 정부와 권력자들에게는 바로 이러한 명확한 인식이 필요합니다.
행동하면 바뀝니다. 그러니 지금 바로 행동해야 한다고 말씀드리고자 합니다.

지금도 세계의 온실가스 배출량은 나날이 가파르게 증가하고 있습니다. 우리 지도자들의 온갖 미사여구와 약속에도 불구하고 자연 서식지들은 여전히 끔찍한 속도로 파괴되고 있습니다.
우리는 여전히 잘못된 방향을 향해 빠른 속도로 나아가고 있습니다. 지금 비상 브레이크를 밟는 것은 불가능해 보일지도 모르지만, 그럼에도 우리는 해야 합니다.
하지만 지금, 사람들이 깨닫기 시작했습니다. 비록 아주 느린 속도지만, 점점 속도가 붙고 있으며 토론의 방향도 변화하고 있습니다.
이렇게 변화한 데는 다양한 이유가 있겠지만, 특히 유스 활동가를 중심으로 한 수많은 활동가의 도움 덕분이었다고 말하고 싶습니다.
액티비즘은 통합니다.
그러니 지금 바로 행동해야 한다고 말씀드리고자 합니다. 우리는 누구나 변화를 일으킬 수 있는 사람이기 때문입니다.
9월 20일과 27일에 진행되는 세계적인 기후 위기 결석 시위에 모두 참여해 주실 것을 촉구합니다.

This award is for all of those millions of people, young people, around the world who together make up the movement called Fridays for Future. All these fearless youth, fighting for their future. A future they should be able to take for granted.

With our business as usual, we are currently on track for a world that could displace billions of people from their homes, taking away even the most basic living conditions for countless of people. Making areas of the world uninhabitable for humans.
The fact that this will create huge conflict and unspoken suffering is far from a secret. And yet, the link between the climate and ecological emergency, mass migration, famine, violations of human rights and war is still not clear to many people.
The changes and the politics required to take on the crisis simply doesn’t exist today.
We, who together are the movement Fridays for Future, we are fighting for our lives.

That is why every single one of us must push from every possible angle, to hold those responsible accountable and to make the people in power act and to take the measures required.
We, who together are the movement Fridays for Future, we are fighting for our lives. But not only that, we are also fighting for our future children and grandchildren, for future generations, for every single living being on earth, whose biosphere we share, whose biosphere we are stealing, whose biosphere we are ruining.
We are fighting for everyone. For you.
For the people living in areas of the world that are already suffering the consequences from the first stages of the climate and ecological emergency.
People who breathe toxic air, who drink contaminated water, who have to flee their homes because of climate and environmental-related disasters.
But right now, I think there is an awakening going on. Even though it is slow, the pace is picking up and the debate is shifting.

Indigenous communities whose lands and waters are being destroyed. People whose food and water supply is being threatened by environmental-related catastrophes, stronger and more frequent droughts, rainfalls, storms, or melting glaciers. Whole nations are now literally being left in ruins or disappearing underneath rising sea levels.
People are dying. And yet, so many of us keep looking away.
The world has never seen a threat to human rights of this scope. So said by the UN Rights chief, Michelle Bachelet, recently during the UN Human Rights council in Geneva, referring to the climate crisis.
She said, the economies of all nations, the institutional, political, social, and cultural fabric of every state, and the rights of all our people and future generations will be impacted.
This is exactly the clarity we need now from governments and the people in power.
Activism works. So what I’m telling you to do now, is to act.

Right now, the world’s emissions of greenhouse gasses keep rising rapidly. The destruction of natural habitats are continued at horrendous speed despite all of the beautiful words and promises from our leaders.
We are still moving in the wrong direction with unimaginable pace. It may seem impossible to pull the emergency break, and yet that is what we have to do.
But right now, I think there is an awakening going on. Even though it is slow, the pace is picking up and the debate is shifting.
This is thanks to a lot of different reasons, but it is a lot because of countless of activists and especially young activists.
Activism works.
So what I’m telling you to do now, is to act. Because no one is too small to make a difference.
I’m urging all of you to take part in the global climate strikes on September 20th and September 27th.
And just one last thing…see you on the streets.
