베트남 인권옹호자 3명에게 징역이 선고되고, 경찰이 이들의 지지자들을 폭행하고 체포한 가운데, 베트남 정부는 평화적인 활동가에 대한 공격을 중단해야 할 것이라고 국제앰네스티가 26일 밝혔다.
여성활동가 부이 티 민 항(Bui Thi Minh Hang), 응우엔 티 투이 쿠인(Nguyen Thi Thuy Quynh)과 공동 피고인 남성인 응우엔 반 민(Nguyen Van Minh)에 대해 베트남 동타프주 인민법원은 “공공질서 저해” 혐의로 2년에서 3년 사이의 징역을 선고했다.
이들의 가족과 블로거, 그 외 시민사회활동가 등 지지자들 수십여 명은 재판 참석을 가로막히며 괴롭힘과 구타를 당하고 체포되었다.
루퍼트 애보트(Rupert Abbott) 국제앰네스티 아시아-태평양 부국장은 “이 날의 판결은 베트남의 평화적인 활동을 처벌하겠다는 또 다른 시도로 보인다”고 말했다.
이번 사건의 피고인 활동가 3명은 지난 2014년 2월, 일행 18명과 함께 전 양심수인 응우엔 박 트루옌(Nguyen Bac Truyen)을 만나기 위해 그의 약혼자 집을 방문하려다 경찰의 공격을 받고 체포되었다.
루퍼트 애보트 부국장은 “베트남 정부는 경찰력을 통제하고 평화적 활동가들과 그 가족, 지지자들에 대한 공격을 중단하도록 해야 할 것”이라며 “자신의 인권을 평화적으로 행사했다는 이유만으로 수감된 사람들은 모두 즉시 무조건적으로 석방되어야 한다”고 말했다.
부이 티 민 항은 반중 시위에 참여해 왔던 유명 활동가로, 다른 평화적 활동가들의 재판에도 참석했던 바 있다. 지난 2월 체포 및 구금된 이후 여러 차례 단식 투쟁을 결행한 탓에 건강이 좋지 못한 상태다.
응우엔 반 민은 정부의 통제를 받지 않는 호아하오교 소속으로, 종교적 자유를 위한 활동을 벌이고 있다.
응우엔 티 투이 쿠인 역시 평화적 반중 시위와 민주화 활동에 참여해 왔다.

The Vietnamese authorities must stop attacks on peaceful activists, Amnesty International said today after three human rights defenders were sentenced to jail and police beat and arrested their supporters.
Women activists Bui Thi Minh Hang and Nguyen Thi Thuy Quynh, along with their male co-defendant Nguyen Van Minh, were handed between two and three-year jail terms on charges of “disturbing public order” at Dong Thap Provincial People’s Court in Viet Nam.
Dozens of their supporters, including family members, bloggers and other civil society activists, were harassed, beaten and arrested to prevent them from attending the court hearing.
“Today’s verdict appears to be another attempt to punish peaceful activism in Viet Nam”, said Rupert Abbott, Amnesty International’s Deputy Asia-Pacific Director.
The three activists were attacked and arrested by police along with 18 others in February 2014 while trying to visit former prisoner of conscience Nguyen Bac Truyen at his fiance’s home.
“Viet Nam should rein in its police and stop attacks on peaceful activists, their families and supporters,” said Rupert Abbott.
“All those imprisoned solely for the peaceful exercise of their human rights should be immediately and unconditionally released.”
Background
Bui Thi Minh Hang is a well-known activist who has taken part in anti-China protests and attended trials of other peaceful activists. She has been on hunger strike several times since her arrest and detention in February and is in poor health.
Nguyen Van Minh is a member of the non-state sanctioned branch of the Hoa Hao Buddhist church and an activist for religious freedom.
Nguyen Thi Thuy Quynh has also taken part in peaceful anti-China protests and pro-democracy activities.
